The Three "R's"
of Recycling

  • Reduce
We can all greatly reduce the amounts of waste produced each day. Think about what you purchase. Is there a great deal of unnecessary packaging? Does this name product come in a re-useable or recyclable container? Can you buy in bulk and therefore use less packaging?

  • Reuse
Today we seem to live in a throw-away society, but each of us makes the choice to dispose of things rather than re-use or repair them. Don't buy disposable products that are available in a re-useable form. Fix that old thing instead of throwing it away and having to buy a new one. Each one of us can make a difference.

  • Recycle
Last, but not least, try to recycle everything that you can. Use the Red Hook Recycling Center to its fullest...for today as well as for our future.

Recycling Guidelines -
Five kinds of ordinary household waste
can be recycled

  • Glass food & beverage containers

  • Metal

  • Paper

  • Corrugated Cardboard

  • Plastics #1 & #2

  • Other items, such as appliances, can be recycled under certain conditions.  Anything brought for recycling must be clean. That means containers must be thoroughly washed to remove all food and drink residue. Papers must be dry and free of oil, food and drink stains. Please do not bring any cardboard or paper that has touched food. When you bring recyclables to the center, you will be asked to separate them into four areas.

Recycling Category List

High-Grade Paper
Low-Grade Paper
Commingled Containers
Corrugated Cardboard

Did You Know?
  • Paper and corrugated cardboard are most wanted, as they bring us the highest prices.
  • There's no need to separate glass and metal food & beverage containers...they're commingled with #1,& #2 plastics.
  • Only corrugated cardboard can be recycled, no pizza boxes, gift boxes, etc.
  • No need to bundle or tie up newspaper, just place them in the container.

Other Recyclable Items

  • Appliances with freon - Disposal fee per item.
  • Other Appliances metal dumpster or material exchange - Furniture & Garbage Dumpster. Disposal fee per item.
  • Clothing -Clean clothing in good condition may be left in the Salvation Army bin.
